Types of Deadlocks for Doors
Hook bolt deadlocks are used on narrow storefronts made of aluminum sliding doors to enhance security and strength of locks. The locks are double-keyed to give greater flexibility in access control.
To accurately measure the new lock, first determine the door's case thickness (or backset). This is the distance between the edge of the front door and the center of the latch hole.
Tubular Latch
The tubular latch is by far the most sought-after door latch. It's simple and straightforward to install, which makes it a popular choice for Joiners and DIY enthusiasts alike. It's available in various sizes shapes, shapes, and levels that will suit any style door handle.
A tubular latch features a rectangular steel casing that contains a spring-loaded follower and an latch bolt (also known as a striker). When you open the door the latch retracts, allowing you to lock and shut the door. When you close the door, the latch bolt springs back to meet the edge of the frame and hold the door shut.
When you're fitting a tubular latch, you'll have to determine the height at which you'd like the latch to rest on the door. Many people assume that a distance of one meter from the floor is the correct height for a door handle and door handle. However, this isn't the case. Cylindrical Latch
Interior doors are often equipped with cylindrical locks. They are found in homes and offices, and are very versatile in terms of their uses. They are similar to mortise locks however, they are much easier and faster to install. They don't require a "mortise" or pocket be cut into the frame of the door like mortise locks. They are simply inserted into a hole, or bore, that is cut into the door's face. They are available in various types and are compatible with levers and knobs to shut and open the door.
The primary difference between mortise and cylinder locks is that cylinder locks can only be opened with the right type of key. The pins are fixed by springs and pins with different heights. When the correct key is used into the cylinder, the pins align with one another, and the cylinder can rotate. This allows the latch bolts to retract and allow the door to be opened.
If the wrong key is used, the pins aren't aligned correctly, and they stop the piston from moving. This is why it's important to use only the right key when you need to access your home or office.
The cylinder is located within the body of the door and is connected to the operating trim by a square or a half-round extension. There are also tiny notches carved out of the cylinder's side that match with key notches. They are designed to line up when the correct key is placed in. When the cylinder is moved it will also move the latch bolt in tandem.
A strike plate is a metal plate that attaches to the door frame and captures the projected latch bolt of the lock. The strike plate is generally constructed from heavy-gauge steel and attached to the frame of the door using screws. It also has a strike opening into which the latch bolt of the lock fits.
Use the right tools to remove the knob or handle of the lock that was previously used and the latch bolt. The position of the new latch bolt and strike on the frame and door after taking off the old hardware. Once the latch bolt and strike plate are in position, it's a good idea to test the operation of the lock by putting it against it with your finger. If the latch bolt and strike plate are damaged or fail to work properly it's the perfect time to think about replacing them.
Key-Locked Lock
This kind of lock is controlled by a key from the outside, and a knob/lever on the inside. It is typically used in areas in which the unauthorized use of the lock isn't an issue, such as office doors. This kind of lock allows the outside lever to be either a locked or unlocked position, while the inside knob/lever is always available for immediate exit. The key is only required to retract the latchbolt once the door is closed.
The pins of a key-lock are oriented and lined up along a line known as the shear line. These pins align with the shearline when the key that is needed is placed into the lock. The plug is then turned to release the latchbolt. If you've experienced a lock that was perfectly aligned but the key would not open, one of the pins could be not aligned with the shearline.
Some locks also feature faces plates, which is mounted on the door's edge. It can be decorative as well as give protection and strength to the locking mechanism. The plates are usually found on mortice locks, rim locks and locks with reversed springs.
A strike plate is also available. It is typically attached to both the door frame and the jamb, and is fitted with a hole through which the bolt can be moved from the cylinder and into the lock. This is often used alongside deadbolts for additional security.
Finally, there is the cylinder, which holds pins that are aligned with the key's point to keep it from turning. It is difficult to select a cylinder of good quality without the right tools and understanding. To lock the front door, you must turn the key in the same direction the door opens. For instance, if the door opens right-handed and the key is left-handed, it must be turned clockwise to lock it. To unlock the door, the key needs to be turned counterclockwise. This is different than other locks, such as Chubb locks that require you to turn your key in the opposite way of how the door opens.
Keyless Latch
A keyless latch allows you to lock and unlock your door without using a traditional key. The locks are operated using apps for smartphones or an access code or key. Some models have a hidden camera to provide added security. Consider your security needs as well as compatibility with existing hardware and doors when choosing the right keyless lock. Certain keyless locks require specific door preparations or alterations therefore, make sure to review the specifications of the manufacturer and installation instructions before installing.
Several companies are developing smart locks that replace traditional locks with keys and provide additional security features. These devices are more robust and can be locked through the use of a code, fingerprint or facial recognition. Some smart locks feature the ability to detect tampering, and detect if a door is opened using a key that is not authorized or force.
